On September 11, 2001, terrorists crashed two hijacked commercial jetliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. Nearly 3,000 innocent people were killed on that day. The horror of this attack – one of three that day – was offset only by the courage and heroism of rescue workers who risked their lives to find survivors and pull them from the rubble.

When one of the workers discovered a 17-foot-tall cross formed by steel wreckage amid
the rubble, it quickly became a symbol of both great loss and renewed hope. The cross
was installed on a pedestal near Ground Zero to honor all of the fallen.

But after it was announced that the memorial cross would be relocated to the new 9/11
Memorial Museum, the American Atheists filed a lawsuit to force the museum to
remove it. The Alliance Defense Fund is committed to defending and protecting our
nation’s memorials from increasing legal attacks by radical activists. ADF will be fully
engaged in the legal battle to protect the cross from being removed.
