A LEGAL ALLIANCE MAKING A DIFFERENCE
In 2004, ADF attorneys filed a lawsuit after the state of Montana began investigating Canyon Ferry Road Baptist Church in East Helena following an election law complaint filed by homosexual activists. The activists were upset because the church circulated petitions to place the state’s constitutional amendment protecting marriage on the ballot.
In February 2009, after years of litigation, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled in the church’s favor – meaning the state had violated the church's constitutional rights. In his concurring opinion, Judge John T. Noonan wrote:
"An unregulated, unregistered press is important to our democracy. So are unregulated, unregistered churches. Churches have played an important--no, an essential--part in the democratic life of the United States."
At the Alliance Defense Fund, our plan is simple. We defend the right of people to freely live out their faith. We do that through a legal alliance of Christian attorneys, like-minded organizations, and the critical financial support of our Ministry Friends.
The Canyon Ferry case is a perfect example!
