the long-term legal battle to keep life
sacred in America.

Abortion is big business for Planned Parenthood.
In 2009, America’s largest abortion provider received nearly $350 million in taxpayer funding – and aborted more than 332,000 preborn children. The University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics was secretly planning to transfer Planned Parenthood’s late-term abortion services to one of its medical facilities. Not only could this abortion program lead to the deaths of nearly 100 developed, 19- to 22-week-old preborn babies each year, but pro-life staff – like Anesthesiologist Nancy Fredericks – would be forced against their conscience to participate in the killing of innocent lives.
By God’s grace, ADF and our allies uncovered its covert scheme, fired off letters to university hospital officials, and helped coordinate a public response. As a result, the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics has abandoned its late-term abortion plans.

“If it weren’t for ADF, abortions would be taking place
[at the surgery center]. ADF helped us to stand for our rights in a way
that really mobilized the pro-life community —
and made it impossible for the boards to implement this plan.
We just are very, very grateful.”
– Nancy Fredericks, Anesthesiologist

What former Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson saw while participating in her first ultrasound-guided abortion changed her life. Abby, now a pro-life advocate and speaker, is a partner with ADF in opposing Planned Parenthood’s attempts to impose taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand on America. Watch her powerful story of hope.
The Tide Is Turning
Since the devastating U.S. Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade in 1973, more than 50 million preborn children have died brutal abortion deaths. That’s equivalent to more than the entire populations of California, Oregon, Nevada, and Arizona, combined.
Despite this staggering fact, there is hope.
The number of abortions in the U.S. has dropped by one-third over the past two decades. Since 2009, a majority of American adults have identified themselves as “pro-life,” and 72 percent of American teenagers agree that abortion is morally wrong.
These pro-life trends show evidence that the abortion tide is turning. ADF and our allies are committed to exposing the truth about abortion and proponents of the culture of death – like Planned Parenthood – which are more concerned with their bottom line than with a mother’s health and safety.
Victories for the Sanctity of Life
ADF and its alliance of nearly 1,900 attorneys are working tirelessly across America to protect the lives of preborn children and to defend religious freedom – and we have won 82 percent of all cases that we’ve litigated to conclusion.
Abortion Pledge Abandoned
Vanderbilt University required all nurse residency applicants for its Women’s Health track to pledge to participate in abortion procedures – despite their religious beliefs or moral convictions. ADF attorneys filed complaints on behalf of two pro-life nursing students who wished to apply to Vanderbilt’s program, but in good conscience couldn’t sign the abortion pledge. The university responded just one day later by abandoning its blatantly illegal policy.
Little Lives Saved
By God’s grace, the United States Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of a federal law barring partial-birth abortion. In this gruesome and inhumane procedure, which is never medically necessary, the abortionist partially delivers the fetus and then mercilessly kills it just moments before it can take its first breath. ADF provided funding for this critical case, which could potentially save countless full-term babies from dying brutal abortion deaths.
No “Right” to Abortion in Ireland
ADF and our allies successfully defended Ireland’s pro-life constitutional amendment after three women attempted to overturn it at the European Court of Human Rights. The life-saving victory in this case, which has been called the “Roe v. Wade” of Europe, will not only protect women and preborn children in Ireland and all 47 European nations subject to the court’s jurisdiction, but it will also prevent activist American courts from importing foreign law advocating abortion as legal precedent.
Crucial Abortion Cases Pending
Every life-saving victory is a blessing from God and provides hope that a legal “right” to abortion in America will one day end. So, case-by-case, ADF is working to help save lives, protect the conscience rights of healthcare workers, and ensure that women are fully informed about abortion.
Teen Abortion Cover-up
In Ohio, a 21-year-old high school teacher and soccer coach brought the 14-year-old girl he impregnated to a Planned Parenthood center where the staff aborted the girl’s baby – without notifying civil authorities or the minor’s parents of the statutory rape. On behalf of the girl’s parents, an ADF-allied attorney filed a lawsuit against Planned Parenthood, which was found to be in violation of the state’s informed consent law. New developments in this case are expected shortly.
Nurse’s Career Jeopardized
Cathy DeCarlo, a pro-life nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York, was forced against her sincerely held religious beliefs and moral convictions to assist in the abortion of a 22-week-old preborn child or suffer possible career-ending punishment. ADF is defending Cathy – and other pro-life healthcare workers – whose constitutionally protected rights of conscience have been violated by her federally funded employer. Cathy’s case is still pending in state court and with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Disclosing the Truth about Abortion
A pro-abortion group in Arizona is seeking to tear down state laws that protect pregnant women and their children. These laws require abortionists to fully inform women about their preborn children and the dangers of abortion at least 24-hours before performing the procedure. ADF attorneys are defending these important informed consent laws and are also working to strengthen the state’s protections for parental consent when minors seek abortions.
