Video: Swedish pastor Ake Green
Foreign law poses a grave threat to religious freedom
Ake Green, a Swedish pastor, received a one-month jail sentence in 2004 under a Swedish "hate crimes" law that forbids criticism of those who participate in homosexual behavior. In February of 2005, the Goeta Appeals Court overturned the decision. The government appealed the case to the Swedish Supreme Court, which ruled November 29, 2005 that Ake did not break the law.
Ake's case and ones like it have implications for the future of religious expression in America. The ACLU and its allies hope to import foreign law decisions to America in order to chip away at
Our First Liberty - religious freedom. In fact, the U.S. Supreme Court has already taken note of international law in some of its decisions. ADF will continue to oppose attacks upon religious liberty here as well as overseas.
