ADF: Victory for marriage in California - 10.5.06
A ruling today by the California Court of Appeal reversed a lower court’s 2005 decision that would have redefined marriage to include same-sex couples. The decision is another major victory for Alliance Defense Fund attorneys who have been defending marriage in California and across the nation.

Ariz. high court gives final word: state’s voters will have say on marriage amendment- 8.31.06
The Arizona Supreme Court today echoed a lower court’s decision this month, ruling that Proposition 107, Arizona’s marriage protection amendment, does not violate the state constitution’s “single subject” rule and will appear on the November ballot.

Washington state DOMA constitutional - 7.26.06
In a 5 to 4 decision, the Washington Supreme Court today declared the state’s law defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman constitutional, reversing two lower court decisions that threw out the law. The decision marks the seventh victory this month in marriage cases around the country in which the Alliance Defense Fund has had involvement.

Rulings in favor of marriage in Nebraska and Tennessee today brought the number of marriage-related victories involving attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund to six in less than two weeks.

Massachusetts high court rules unanimously in favor of voters - 7.10.06
In a victory for the rule of law and the voter initiative process, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court today unanimously shut down a legal challenge to a proposed state constitutional amendment defining marriage as one man and one woman. The court ruled that the initiative does not violate the state constitutional prohibition on improper use of the initiative process to intervene in a court case to reverse the verdict.

GA high court protects marriage, respects the will of the people - 7.6.06
The Supreme Court of Georgia today reversed a trial judge’s ruling in May that declared unlawful an amendment to the state constitution defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. According to the Alliance Defense Fund, the real winners are the 76 percent of voters in Georgia who passed the amendment to protect marriage.

New York’s highest court rules in favor of marriage - 7.6.06
In a historic victory, the New York Court of Appeals today ruled 4-2 against an attempt to redefine marriage in the Empire State. The court agreed that a decision on the issue should be left to the state’s legislature. ADF filed a friend-of-the-court brief in Hernandez v. Robles on behalf of the Family Research Council. In a 2005 ruling, a state intermediate appeals court called marriage a “cultural, social and legal” ideal.
