On Thursday, a district court judge in Iowa ruled that a law protecting marriage was unconstitutional, and he independently mandated that same-sex couples could "marry" in the state. At least one same-sex couple was "married" -- and several more submitted applications -- before a temporary stay was issued, prohibiting additional "marriages" from taking place while the case moves through the courts.
Other attacks to further the "marriage" rights of same-sex couples are ongoing right now in many other states, including Rhode Island, New York, Oklahoma, and others. These events clearly demonstrate once again that the only way to protect marriage once and for all is with both state and federal constitutional amendments. One or more judges cannot be allowed to trump the clear will of the people who overwhelmingly value marriage. Activist judges must not unilaterally redefine society's most important institution against the will of the people.
As family policy councils and other allies continue their efforts to pass state and national amendments protecting marriage, ADF must meet the legal challenges in the courtroom, holding back and defeating the efforts to impose same-sex "marriage" on America. And we need your help to do it!
