ADF defends marriage once again
Inside the Issues with Alan Sears
March 11, 2008
Advocates of the homosexual legal agenda claim they simply want same-sex "marriage" or "marriage equality." But in truth, their agenda leads to the end of marriage entirely.
The latest battles in Oregon and California show that these groups will stop at nothing to reach their goals, even if it means silencing the voice of the people.
In Oregon, the battle began in 2004 when voters of that state passed a constitutional amendment affirming marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Advocates of the homosexual legal agenda have been working since then to reverse the will of the people, and their agenda took a major step forward in February when a court ruled that Oregon citizens could not vote to repeal "domestic partnerships."
Last week, ADF attorneys filed an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit asking that court to allow Oregon citizens to defend marriage in their state. We will keep you posted on this case as it progresses.
In California, on March 4, ADF attorney Glen Lavy argued before the Supreme Court of California on behalf of the people of that state, asking the justices to allow the decision of California voters on the issue of marriage to stand. Four of seven justices now have the power to uphold or strike down that state’s Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), passed in 2000 by 61 percent of voters. The law, Proposition 22, declared that California affirms marriage as the union of one man and one woman and prohibited advocates of homosexual behavior from forcing same-sex "marriage" on the citizens of the state.
Advocates of the homosexual legal agenda challenged the constitutionality of Proposition 22, and in 2005, a Superior Court judge ruled in their favor. We appealed this outrageous ruling on behalf of our client, the Proposition 22 Legal Defense and Education Fund, and won a judgment affirming marriage from the California Court of Appeal in 2006, but marriage opponents appealed the case to the California Supreme Court.
The court will issue its ruling within 90 days. Please be in vigilant prayer for this crucial ruling, as this case could have monumental implications; a loss could provide a major opportunity for advocates to try to force same-sex "marriage" on the entire country.
Meanwhile, we continue to press forward in defense of marriage, and your right to determine what tomorrow looks like in America. Thank you for your faithful prayers and gifts, and may God bless our combined efforts for His glory.
