Broad support for Christian student group reflected in numerous briefs filed with Supreme Court
The U.S. Supreme Court received 22 friend-of-the-court briefs Thursday in support of a Christian Legal Society chapter’s lawsuit against California’s Hastings College of the Law. The briefs demonstrate the breadth and diversity of support for the group’s rights protected by the First Amendment, according to attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund and CLS Center for Law & Religious Freedom who are litigating the case and filed their brief in the case on Jan. 28.

ADF-allied attorney available to media at hearing over Ariz. laws protecting women
Deborah Sheasby, legal counsel with the Center for Arizona Policy and an Alliance Defense Fund allied attorney, will be available for media interviews following a hearing Friday in a lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood that seeks to strike down two Arizona laws protecting the health and safety of women. The court granted ADF and CAP permission to file a friend-of-the-court brief in the case, but they are appealing the court’s decision to deny doctors, several organizations, and the bill’s sponsors the ability to intervene in the lawsuit to defend the laws. Friday’s hearing concerns the state’s motion to dismiss a portion of the lawsuit as well as a motion to intervene filed by the Arizona speaker of the House, who also wishes to defend the laws.

Christians threatened with arrest in Richmond for sharing Gospel, lawsuit filed
Alliance Defense Fund allied attorney Steve Taylor filed a lawsuit Friday against the city of Richmond on behalf of five Christian men threatened with arrest for sharing their faith on public property and at public events. The suit alleges that police officers with the city violated the men’s First Amendment rights by demanding that they stop their “disturbing” and “offending” religious expression, which consisted of peacefully preaching to small groups, one-on-one witnessing, and handing out tracts.

After receiving a letter from Alliance Defense Fund attorneys, Middle Tennessee State University has agreed to retract its discriminatory requirement that a pro-life student group pay a security fee for a campus display. ADF attorneys representing the student group, Pro-Life Collegians, argued that the fee was unconstitutional, noting that other student groups are not required to pay for campus security during their events.

Immigration judge: German anti-homeschooling policy 'repellant to everything we believe as Americans’
A U.S. immigration court Tuesday granted political asylum to a German homeschooling family, finding that the German government’s persecution of the family violated the family’s basic human rights. The judge in the case reportedly called Germany’s anti-homeschooling policy "repellant to everything we believe as Americans" at a hearing held Thursday. The Alliance Defense Fund provided funding to the Home School Legal Defense Association for the case.

Perry v. Schwarzenegger: Day 11 Update
Day 11, Tuesday, can be aptly described as an exercise in the pot calling the kettle black (or what's good for the goose is somehow not good for the gander). The plaintiffs' case, in some part, has hinged upon the premise that reasonable people reflect upon their viewpoints and sometimes change their opinions.
