ALBUQUERQUE — Alliance Defense Fund Senior Legal Counsel Doug Napier will address the American Legion Department of New Mexico Mid-Winter Conference Saturday regarding the defense of veterans’ memorials in New Mexico and nationwide. In 2007, ADF, the American Legion, and Liberty Legal Institute announced a joint effort to protect American veterans’ memorials from legal attacks by organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union.
“One person’s agenda shouldn’t diminish the sacrifice made by America’s veterans and their families,” said Napier. “No one is dishonored when a memorial is graced with a cross or words that honor God. However, our veterans are dishonored by the campaign to erase the memories these memorials represent.”
ADF attorneys sent a letter Tuesday to the mayor of the city of Taos, offering to defend a veterans’ memorial in the city should it come under legal attack. The memorial, which contains a stone monument topped by a cross, is dedicated to the 200th/500th Coast Artillery. A copy of the letter is available at
