CLEVELAND — An ADF-allied attorney sent a letter Thursday to City of Cleveland Law Director Robert J. Triozzi, asking him to stop the city’s newly enacted “domestic partnership registry,” which violates the Ohio Constitution.
“Local governments should not enact laws in defiance of the state constitution, which was amended by Ohio voters in 2004 by an overwhelming margin to prevent marriage counterfeits,” said ADF-allied attorney David Langdon.
The city of Cleveland’s registry recognizes a legal status for a relationship between two adults who are cohabitating in a “committed” partnership in approximation of marriage, which is expressly prohibited under Article XV, Section 11 of the Ohio Constitution.
