Two More Wins for
Communities and Families Against Sexually-Oriented Businesses...
Over twenty years ago, I served as Executive Director of the Attorney
General's Commission on Pornography with ADF co-founder, Dr. James
Dobson.
It was a time of great trial – as we examined some of the vilest
material imaginable and the negative secondary effects of
sexually-oriented businesses on communities, women, and children – such
as violent and sexual crimes, degradation of women, prostitution, and so
much more.
That's why I am pleased to report on two more wins against the
expansion of sexually-oriented businesses.
In Pittstown Township,
Pennsylvania, ADF provided funding for allied
attorney Randy Wenger (right) in a successful effort to help residents
stop zoning approval of a sexually-oriented business featuring nude
dancing.
The residents were concerned about the detrimental effect that the club
would have on their community – especially since the club was planning
to allow its "patrons" to bring their own alcohol to consume.
After hearing the residents' concerns, the township denied the club
zoning approval, but the club developers appealed that decision to the
Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas. The court issued an order
that rejected the appeal – saying that the township was within the law
to reject the club's application.
A copy of the order can be read at www.telladf.org/UserDocs/PittstonTownshipOrder.pdf.

In
Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana, the parish council approved an
ordinance that enforces comprehensive regulations on sexually-oriented
businesses.
The model ordinance ADF supplied outlines what owners and employees of
sexually-oriented businesses may or may not do; and enacts permit and
licensing requirements; as well as criminal background checks; limits on
operating hours; and establishes health code, architectural, and
signage requirements.
A copy of the model ordinance is available at www.telladf.org/UserDocs/modelordinance.pdf.
ADF senior legal counsel Mike Johnson (left) provided assistance to the
Tangipahoa Parish council. He says: "We want other local citizens'
groups to feel empowered to take the same actions...This ordinance is
something that can be duplicated in other cities and counties
nationwide."
We praise God for these two victories to protect communities and
families from the cultural pollution of sexually-oriented
businesses. For more information on the steps you and your
community can take to stop the encroachment of such businesses in local
neighborhoods, go to www.communitydefense.org.
