TO: Carlo Diceglie Monday, we celebrated Memorial Day - to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom - the brave man and women who gave their very lives so that others could live free of tyranny and oppression. Many of the monuments that have been dedicated to these fallen heroes appropriately contain crosses, Scripture, or other religious symbols which commemorate their ultimate sacrifice. But now, the ACLU and its allies want to strip these public memorials, and remove the honor and respect represented by these displays to these courageous men and women. That is why ADF has joined forces with the American Legion and our ally, Liberty Legal Institute, to defend and protect veterans' memorials that contain
crosses, bible verses and other words and symbols chosen by the friends
and families of the fallen -- across the nation from legal attacks by
the ACLU and its allies. ADF has already played a major role in
the ongoing legal battle to preserve the Mt. Soledad cross memorial in
San Diego, and to remove the ACLU-placed boards over the Mojave World
War I
Memorial Cross (see right for before
and after ACLU censorship). This past Thursday, May 24th, at the National Press Club in Washington
D.C., the Legion, ADF, and Liberty Legal held a joint press conference
to announce the "Defense of Veterans' Memorials Project." Thomas
Bock, past national commander for the Legion said: "We stand here today to put the ACLU and
any other organization on
notice...We will be there to fight for the heritage given to us by our
founding fathers...we put the ACLU on notice - and any other group that
wants a piece of our religious heritage and values...No longer will you
be able to attack our veterans' memorials...without taking on the
collective commitment of the American Legion, ADF, [and] Liberty Legal
Institute."The Legion will be cataloging all of the veterans' memorials across the country to create a database so they can immediately notify ADF when a cross or memorial containing religious symbols comes under legal attack. ADF and Liberty Legal will defend these memorials, free of charge, against groups that seek to dishonor our nation's veterans, as well as erase our nation's religious history and heritage. For more information on the project, please go to www.telladf.org/memorials And the legal attacks on veterans' memorials by the ACLU and its allies are not an idle threat. Last week, the "Freedom from Religion Foundation" said that if the ACLU was to ultimately win the Mt. Soledad and Mojave cases, the organization would consider escalating their attack on crosses, Scripture, and other religious symbols on veterans' memorials. 1 ADF, along with the American Legion and Liberty Legalž will do all we can, with God's grace, to make sure that the sacrifices made by our nation's veterans and their families to preserve our freedom - and their freedom to choose how they will be remembered -- were not in vain. 1 Nathan Burchfiel, "Christians, Veterans Team Up to Protect Religious Memorials," CNSNews.com, May 21, 2007. |
